Third Project Steering Committee Meeting of PD 519/08 Rev.1 (F): “Tropical Forest Conservation for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Enhancing Carbon Stocks in Meru Betiri National Park, Indonesia”
The third PSC meeting of ITTO PD 519/08 Rev.1 (F) was held in IPB Convention Center, Bogor, on 29 December 2011. The meeting was started by welcoming remark by the Director of the Center for Climate Change and Policy Research and Development, Dr. Kirsfianti Linda Ginoiga. The PSC meeting was then chaired by Director General of Forestry Research and Development Agency (FORDA), Dr. Tachrir Fathoni. He thanked and welcomed all PSC members or their representative and other participants. In particular he thanked Dr Hwan Ok Ma, from ITTO.
Director General of FORDA in his remark, outlined the purpose of the meeting by highlighting the importance to evaluate the second year progress of the program and providing guidance in achieving more effective results of the program. He expressed deep appreciation to ITTO for close cooperation with FORDA of the Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia, through various activities including improvement of Indonesia’s capacity to deal with climate change issue especially related to REDD+.

Illegal Logging as a Threat to Forest Resourcesand Implementation of REDD in Indonesia
Indonesian forest is one of the center for biodiversity in the world, and Indonesia is the third from seven countries called as mega diversity country. Indonesian forest is a home for thousand types of flora and fauna that mostly endemic of Indonesia. Total forest area in Indonesia is about 134 million ha or about 60 percent from total area of Indonesia. Forest has direct and indirect benefits that has been widely known. Direct benefits of forest include timber and non timber forest products, meanwhile inderect benefits include its role for micro climate, hydrological function, and soil fertility, as well as the sources for germplasm essential for current human life and for the future.

Study To Develop Alternative Source Of Income to Improve the Livelihood of Local Communities Living Inside and In the Surrounding Area of Meru Betiri National Park Activities have been carried out to enhance potential economic activities through community forest partnership programs of community in villages surrounding MBNP. This is one of the needs recommended from the result of consultation with related stakeholders, especially in relation to REDD+ activities in MBNP. This program is facilitated by LATIN. The activities include: Mapping of agroforestry types in Curahnongko village Mapping activity has been carried out through collaboration of community, NGO and officer of MBNP. Coverage of mapping includes; types of agroforestry in rehabilitation zone of MBNP managed by farmer groups of Curahnongko village. Mapping of boundaries of agroforestry managed by farmer groups or individuals. |
