About The Project

CONSERVATION FOR REDUCING EMISSIONS FROM DEFORESTATION AND FOREST DEGRADATION (REDD) AND ENHANCING CARBON STOCKS (REDD-PLUS) IN MERU BETIRI NATIONAL PARK, INDONESIA” is executed by Forestry Research Agency (FORDA) in coordination with International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) during 48 months.
Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP) has been selected as a representative area with many of the challenges usually faced in reducing emission and enhancement of carbon stocks in one side and poverty reduction of community living surrounding the forest on the other side. The primary causes of the problems are lack of institutional setting to prevent further deforestation, degradation and biodiversity loss and unavailability of reliable system to monitor changes in carbon stocks.
In order to maintain and restore goods and services of forest ecosystem in the Park, including its function to store carbon, program intervention is critically important.
This program is one of demonstration activities and could become the most importan stimulus to achieve the overall goal of REDD and REDD-plus, as mandated by COP decision including Bali Action Plan and Copenhagen Accord. This program was generously financed by 7 & i holding Ltd (Japan) to promote Public-Private Partnership in conservation tropical forests in Indonesia.

The Program aims at contributing to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to enhancing forest carbon stocks through enhanced community participation in conservation and management of the Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP).
The specific objectives of the program are: (1) contributing to REDD and REDD- plus through community, public and private participation in conservation tropical forest in Indonesia, and (2) develop a credible measureble, reportable and verifiable (MRV) system for monitoring REDD and REDD-plus in MBNP.
